One of the most exciting components of the 2013 Intersec Fire Expo in Dubai was the 4th annual, UAE International 911 Firefighter Challenge. The course was set up at the main entrance to the conference and the competition was run over two days.
The UAE International 911 Firefighter Challenge is based on the FireFit Competition in Canada and the Firefighter Combat Challenge in the U.S. The course is made up of 5 tasks and is completed in full protective gear while breathing air from a self contained breathing apparatus. For the firefighters participating, this grueling event was a race against themselves, their opponent, and the clock.
Task 1: Stair Climb
The first task is the stair climb with a Hose Bundle. The bundle weighs about 45 lbs. and is carried on the outside shoulder as the firefighter climbs the stairs. The bundle is deposited into a box at the top of the tower before the firefighter begins the Hose Hoist. The firefighter then returns the bundle to the base of the tower.
Task 2: Hose Hoist
A 45 lb Donut Roll is hauled hand over hand to the top landing of the tower. The hose roll is lifted and placed in a box at the top of the tower.
Task 3: Forcible Entry
The Forcible Entry evolution uses a chopping simulator. The Cook shot mallet is used in an overhead striking motion to move a beam past the designated line.
Task 4: Hose Advance
The firefighter then runs around cones placed on the course to reach the 1 ¾ charged hoseline. The hoseline is advanced 75’ to the “Nozzle Zone” and the competitor hits a target with a water stream. Once the target is down, the competitor shuts off the nozzle and places the hose on the ground.
Task 5: Victim Rescue
A 165 lb. mannequin must be dragged backwards a distance of 100 ft. Time stops when the competitor crosses the finish line completely with the mannequin.
